Infrasense completed a subsurface pavement structure investigation of 18 sections of pavement in Western Maryland using high-speed ground penetrating radar (GPR). The sections were surveyed in both driving directions to obtain continuous structure information for both bound and unbound material layers. The GPR results will be used to supplement Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) back-calculations to achieve more accurate pavement properties, such as structural capacity and remaining life. Additionally, the continuous GPR data will be used to identify homogenous areas of pavement structure in order to reduce the number of cores required for each section. The results of this project will be used for the design of upcoming rehabilitation work.
