Meet The Team:

RALF BIRKEN, PH.D.

Principal Engineer

“Infrasense is a great place to work. I like working in a small business where I can contribute in many different ways. Some examples are being responsible for client projects, writing proposals, business development, conferences, field work, programming of custom in-house software solutions, and several internal engineering projects, developing the next generation tools for the company. In addition, the work hours and location are flexible, the whole team has a ‘can do’ attitude to get things done alone or collaborative.”

Dr. Ralf Birken is a geophysical engineer by training (Post-Doc level), an expert in applied electromagnetic geophysics, and has 20+ years of research and engineering experience in industry and academia in near-surface geophysical mapping, designing new mobile measurement systems, dealing with Big Data sets, and applying sensor technologies for civil infrastructure health monitoring applications.  His current focus is on applications like Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), Pavement and Bridge Deck Inspection, and Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE).  The most commonly used tools are Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electromagnetic Induction, Optical (2D and 3D), and Acoustic Methods.

KEITH SOROTA

Project Engineer

“Working at Infrasense I maintain a great sense of pride in the diverse mix of projects that I am working on, whether it is from start to finish, or as a part of a larger team.  We are a small company that relies on each of its team members to take on multiple projects and positions simultaneously, which allows us to improve our process constantly.  The best part of working at Infrasense is that I have the flexibility to be a PM one day, field lead the next, and then work on internal engineering projects the next.  The team that we have built is constantly pushing the companies limits and abilities, and it has been inspiring to be apart of it.”

Since 2007, Mr. Sorota has been working in the remote sensing and NDT field using various near-surface geophysical techniques, including ground penetrating radar, EM conductivity, ultrasonic, and seismic methods (MASW, Reflection, Refraction). He holds a bachelor’s degree in Earth and Environmental Sciences: GeoScience Concentration from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Mr. Sorota has experience with a multitude of geophysical projects, combining these different techniques to investigate the subsurface. Keith’s project background includes subsurface target mapping, concrete condition mapping, pile depth investigations, landfill liner delineation, bedrock fracture mapping, a full suite of downhole mapping, groundwater detection, and bedrock/stratigraphy mapping. He has been a guest speaker in classrooms at UMass and Tufts University teaching practical geophysical applications to undergraduate students.

AIDAN ROLLI

Staff Engineer

“I work on a variety of projects – however, I primarily manage bridge deck condition mapping for Aerial Infrared Thermography projects. When I’m not in the office, I am in the field working on data collection. Since starting, I have been to 20 states and Toronto to collect data for our projects. My personal favorite was a site in Michigan where we surveyed a mile of a water runoff tunnel located 100 feet underground!

I like the environment of this small firm because it allows me to contribute to all aspects of a project, whether that is a assisting on a proposal, collecting and analyzing data, or creating deliverables. The environment also allows me to excel as a member of a team where everyone is friendly and eager to help.”

Since entering the field in 2022, Mr. Rolli has been working with numerous nondestructive testing methods including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Infrared Thermography (IR), high resolution visual (HRV) imaging, aerial IR imaging, Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), and Impact Echo. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts – Lowell. Aidan has quickly become a valuable contributor in the field and office, deploying NDT testing methods on hundreds of bridge decks and thousands of miles of pavement and contributing to the analysis and reporting of this data.

Peter Tham

Engineering Technician

Working at Infrasense has been a great opportunity. My previous work experience as a Field Service Technician for the last 9 years, from parking equipment, access control, and appliance repair has given me the hands-on experience to troubleshoot equipment in the field.

As an Engineering Technician at Infrasense now, I get the opportunity to travel and visit places that I have never thought of going to before. Joining a smaller work environment means you can take on more responsibility and become deeply involved in the company’s daily operations, which makes you feel more involved. Everyone at Infrasense is very friendly and easy to work with. The remote work office/home balance is flexible here at Infrasense and is a great place to work
