Infrasense has been keeping our rapid automated sounding (RAS) systems hard at work on bridge deck scanning projects in Rhode Island, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Oregon! The RAS technology collects data at a rolling speed (20 mph) using heavy chains mounted on wheels. As the chains rotate, they continuously strike the deck, generating an acoustic response that reveals subsurface delaminations. High-sensitivity microphones capture this data, which is then synchronized with GPS for precise geolocation of delaminations. This automated process ensures consistent, reliable detection in a matter of minutes for each bridge deck. The RAS delamination maps can be combined with results from other Infrasense deck scanning methods to include cracking, spalling, patching, rebar cover, and other conditions. Comprehensive deck condition information empowers decision-makers to more effectively plan preservation, maintenance, and rehabilitation efforts.
