Infrasense engineers have evaluated a group of bridge decks carrying a major highway in Massachusetts for their asphalt thickness. A vehicle-based GPR system collected thickness data over each bridge, including an additional 300 feet on either side of each bridge. The GPR data was analyzed to identify the thickness of the asphalt concrete (AC) and the thickness of the concrete cover over rebar, where present in the GPR data. Pavement cross-sections, including the individual pavement layers, were also detected by the GPR data analysis. The asphalt layer thickness values were reported using GPS data and delivered as color contour maps alongside reported concrete cover over rebar for select bridges.
