Infrasense utilizes a broad suite of established nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Infrared Thermography (IR), Aerial Infrared Thermography, and Rapid Automated Sounding (RAS) to assess bridge deck conditions. The NDE data is referenced to the bridge deck surface using both a survey grid and high-precision, differential GPS coordinates to accurately identify and locate areas of concern.
By quantifying and mapping the areas of concern, the appropriate maintenance, preservation, and rehabilitation strategies can be identified for each bridge deck. In cases where rehabilitation is needed, the scope and work requirement for repairs can be accurately estimated prior to performing the work. This allows repair budgets to be used efficiently by focusing available funds on the bridge decks most in need of repair. Accurately identifying compromised areas and percentage of the bridge for repair helps bridge owners avoid costly overruns.
The GPR and IR data is collected according to ASTM 6087 and ASTM 4788, using state-of-the-art technology.
In addition to comprehensive condition assessment, the processed NDT data can provide the following:

We typically deploy Ground Penetrating Radar, Infrared Thermography, and Rapid Automated Sounding together to detect different types of deterioration—GPR identifies corrosion and subsurface damage, IR reveals delaminations and moisture intrusion, while RAS provides acoustic verification of debonding. This multi-method approach ensures no defects are missed and provides the complete condition picture needed for accurate rehabilitation planning.
Our vehicle-mounted systems collect complete deck condition data at highway speeds, typically completing assessments in hours rather than the days or weeks required for manual inspection methods. The high-speed data collection eliminates lane closures and traffic control costs while providing more comprehensive coverage than traditional techniques can achieve.
We deliver comprehensive NDE inspection reports with quantified deterioration mapping, GIS-compatible condition data, and detailed analysis that meets ASTM 6087 and ASTM 4788 standards. Our GPS-referenced results integrate seamlessly into bridge management systems and provide the defensible condition assessment documentation required for federal reporting and rehabilitation funding applications.
