Pavement Structure Evaluation

High-Speed Assessment for Optimal Performance

Overview

Infrasense utilizes a suite of nondestructive testing (NDT) methods including high-speed vehicle-mounted Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), Traffic Speed Deflectometer (TSD), and various acoustic and ultrasonic methods to evaluate pavement structures and underlying conditions. The NDT data is geo-referenced using high-precision GPS for accurate identification and location mapping.

Our comprehensive pavement evaluation services support infrastructure decisions through structural capacity testing, layer analysis, and deterioration detection at both project and network levels.

Capabilities

Measuring pavement layer thickness
and structural capacity analysis
Structural assessment
including remaining life calculations and overlay requirements
Subsurface detection of voids, moisture ingress, and asphalt stripping
Network-level evaluations
for asset inventory updates and pavement management integration

Results You Can Trust

In addition to comprehensive pavement assessment, we can process the NDT data to provide the following:

  • Cross-Section Analysis Reports
Pavement structure plots showing depth of all pavement layers with tabular results synchronized to GPS locations.
  • CADD Compatible Structure Maps
Quantities and maps of subsurface voiding, moisture ingress, and stripping areas for targeted maintenance planning.
  • Geospatially Referenced Results
GIS-compatible plots and geodatabase layers allowing integration into ArcGIS for comprehensive pavement management.

“For a complicated project in Harvard Square, Kleinfelder hired Infrasense to conduct GPR of the roadway, redline tunnel and the utilities using Infrasense’s technology. The data was proven to be valuable to determine the existence of utilities in question where records were not complete, the roadway structure, and the MBTA redline tunnel where we were not able to get a permit to excavate to locate the top of the tunnel due to permitting issues. The data and technology has come a long way and was proven to be invaluable.”
— Tyson Ross, Senior Project Professional, Kleinfelder
“We’ve partnered with Infrasense on a range of projects over the years, and they’ve consistently delivered. Their team brings deep technical expertise, professionalism, and a willingness to go the extra mile—especially on fast-moving or complex jobs where precision matters most. When we need GPR or specialized NDE, Adam is always our first call.”
— Mollie Rhett, Director of Marketing, ICC-IMS
“NCE has partnered with Infrasense on local and state highway pavement evaluation projects for more than 15 years. Infrasense provides extensive knowledge and expertise with GPR testing and analysis, providing valuable layer thickness information for assessing and selecting pavement rehabilitation treatments. Due to Adam and his team, Infrasense is the only GPR specialty firm we call.”

Have a Question?

  • We select methods based on project objectives—GPR provides layer thickness and subsurface conditions at highway speeds, FWD measures structural capacity for remaining life calculations, while acoustic methods detect delaminations between layers. The combination depends on whether you need structural analysis, material characterization, or comprehensive condition assessment for network-level decision making.

  • Our vehicle-mounted systems provide continuous structural and thickness data that eliminates 80-90% of required cores while delivering superior coverage compared to point sampling methods. When combined with FWD deflection testing, we can determine layer moduli and structural capacity without laboratory analysis, providing faster results at significantly lower cost than traditional investigation programs.

  • Our GPS-referenced data integrates directly into pavement management systems, providing the quantitative structural condition and remaining life data needed for objective maintenance prioritization. By combining thickness measurements, structural capacity analysis, and condition mapping, agencies can optimize treatment timing and selection, typically extending network life by 20-30% through data-driven decision making.
