INFRASENSE PARTICIPATION IN FHWA LONG TERM PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE (LTPP) PROGRAM

Since 1991, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has funded the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program with the goal of collecting pavement performance data for major research areas of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP). Infrasense participated in the LTPP throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s, determining pavement layer thicknesses using ground penetrating radar (GPR). As part of this project, Infrasense collected GPR data at LTPP test sites across the country, including sites in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, New Jersey, and Delaware.

The LTPP program consists of General Pavement Study (GPS) sites and Specific Pavement Sites (SPS). Infrasense performed GPR evaluations on dozens of these GPS and SPS sites. The GPS sites are primarily focused on measuring the long term performance of commonly used pavement structural designs. On the other hand, SPS sites are specially constructed to investigate particular pavement engineering properties and design factors. By controlling the design factors across multiple sections at each test site, the effects of these factors can be better compared as they relate to the long term performance of each pavement.
